Before You Buy an Iron Supplement

Iron supplements may suit people whose lab results or doctor show low iron, such as some women with heavy periods, pregnant women under follow-up, or people on restricted diets. Options here differ in form (capsules, tablets, softgels, liquid, lactoferrin sachets), strength per dose and added vitamins. Prices run from 170 to 1,400 EGP, with cash on delivery and 12–72 hour delivery.

How to choose

  • Get a blood test including ferritin first to know whether you actually need iron.
  • Compare iron per dose on the label, e.g. 28 mg in Easy Iron versus 45 mg in Sleevar.
  • Sensitive stomach? Ask about liposomal Vee Ferro or Nature's Way liquid iron as possibly gentler options.
  • Compare cost per daily dose, not pack price; packs range from 14 sachets to 90 capsules.
  • Ask the pharmacist if you're pregnant, take other medicines, or are buying for a child.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a blood test before buying iron?

It's recommended. Tiredness has many possible causes besides low iron, and taking iron you don't need can lead to build-up in the body. A blood count and ferritin test help your doctor decide whether you need it and how much. Ask the pharmacist if you're unsure which test to request.

When and how should I take iron?

Iron is usually absorbed better on an empty stomach with a vitamin C source like orange juice. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Keep tea, coffee, milk and calcium supplements about two hours apart. Follow the label dose or the one your doctor set.

What's the difference between lactoferrin, liposomal and regular iron?

Lactoferrin, as in Dulefer sachets, is an iron-binding protein naturally found in milk. Liposomal iron, like Vee Ferro and Lipoferrex, is wrapped in a fat layer and marketed as gentler on the stomach. Traditional forms come at various prices. Ask the pharmacist which suits your needs and tolerance.

Does iron have side effects?

The most common are constipation, nausea or mild stomach discomfort, and dark stools are usual and generally harmless. If symptoms persist or bother you, ask the pharmacist about switching form or timing. Always store iron out of children's reach, since an overdose can be dangerous for them.

Can I take iron during pregnancy or give it to my child?

Iron needs often rise during pregnancy, but the dose and type should come from your obstetrician. Children need very different doses from adults, so never give them an adult supplement. Ask the pharmacist before buying and mention the age and any other medicines being taken.
