Before You Buy a Face Moisturizer

A moisturizer is a basic step for every skin type, oily skin included. The options here differ mainly in texture and ingredients: light gels like Neutrogena Hydro Boost, richer creams with urea or glycerin for dry skin, and soothing panthenol creams for irritated skin. Some are day creams with SPF, others are night creams, and prices run from about 45 EGP to over 1,400 EGP.

How to choose

  • Oily or combination skin: a light gel texture, like Hydro Boost or a hyaluronic gel, usually feels better.
  • Dry skin: choose a richer cream with urea, glycerin or shea butter.
  • Sensitive or post-laser skin: look for panthenol, zinc oxide or centella among the ingredients.
  • A day cream with SPF 15 doesn't replace a separate sunscreen for long sun exposure.
  • Using a topical acne treatment or medical peel? Ask the pharmacist before choosing a moisturizer.

Frequently asked questions

My skin is oily, do I still need a moisturizer?

Usually yes. Oily skin can still lack hydration and may feel tight without it. A light, fast-absorbing gel such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost or Starville Hydrating Gel is often a good fit, used in a small amount. Unsure of your skin type? Ask the pharmacist.

What's the difference between a gel, a cream and a balm?

Gels are the lightest and suit oily skin and hot weather. Creams are richer and suit normal to dry skin. Balms like Cicaplast Baume B5 are thicker and are often used on very dry or irritated areas, and may work better at night.

Do I need separate day and night creams?

Not necessarily. One moisturizer that suits your skin can be enough. Some day creams add sun protection, like Eva Skin Clinic Vitamin C Day Cream SPF 15, while night creams tend to be richer. On a budget, a good moisturizer plus a separate sunscreen is a practical choice.

Is an expensive moisturizer better than a cheap one?

Not always. A panthenol cream around 55–96 EGP or a glycerin cream around 45 EGP can cover basic hydration well. Pricier options may add extra ingredients or a different texture. What matters most is whether the ingredients match your skin type and needs.

I have acne-prone or sensitive skin. What should I pick?

Look for a light moisturizer made for acne-prone or sensitive skin, such as Starville cream or Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream. Test a small amount on one area for a few days before full use. If redness or breakouts persist, ask the pharmacist or see a dermatologist.
