The 2018 review (11 studies) found black seed lowered weight by 2.11 kg and waist circumference by 3.52 cm more than placebo, and the 2026 review (31 trials, 2,145 people) found a fall in weight of 1.59 kg and in BMI of 0.51 but no effect on waist circumference. The authors called the result modest and said quality varies, so this is a small fall, not a slimming plan, and it goes alongside lifestyle and a doctor’s diagnosis if you have obesity.
From heritage: the seed in the chapter of medicine
The hadith “In black seed there is a remedy for every disease except death” is recorded by al-Bukhari (5688) in the Book of Medicine, under the chapter on black seed, meaning it was treated as a remedy, not as a food or a diet aid. An Islamweb fatwa says it is a remedy, not an act of worship, that no hadith sets the amount or method, and that its use is referred to experienced doctors. The text says nothing about slimming, so what did modern research find?
What did the reviews find?
| Review | Who and how many | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Namazi 2018 | 11 placebo-controlled studies in adults | Weight fell 2.11 kg (0.61 to 3.61; variation between studies of 72.4%), BMI fell 1.16 (0.51 to 1.81) and waist circumference fell 3.52 cm (2.92 to 4.10) versus placebo; no serious side effects were reported |
| Musazadeh 2026 | 31 trials, 2,145 participants, metabolic diseases | Weight fell 1.59 kg (0.15 to 3.03) and BMI fell 0.51 (0.18 to 0.85); no change in waist, hip, their ratio and insulin |
| Jafari 2025 | 82 studies, 5,026 participants, doses of 200 to 4,600 mg/day for 1 to 48 weeks | The abstract lists improvement in body fat percentage, weight, BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio without pooled numbers |

- A small fall: 1.6 to 2.1 kg on average, a mean between groups, not a promise for one person.
- The same direction for weight: two reviews found a fall in weight, and the 2018 authors called it a “moderate effect”.
- Waist differs: the 2018 review found a fall of 3.52 cm, and the 2026 review found no effect on waist circumference.
- Other details: the same reviews point to changes in sugar, pressure and fats: black seed and blood sugar and black seed and cholesterol.
Important caveats
- Large variation: the 2018 review had variation between studies of 72.4% for weight, and said high-quality studies are few and the findings need caution.
- Conflict on waist: 2018 found a fall in waist circumference and 2026 found no effect, so we do not say it “burns belly fat”.
- Modest improvement: the 2026 review called the results “modest improvements” and said study quality varies and better trials are needed.
- Different doses and durations: trials ran from 1 to 48 weeks at 200 to 4,600 mg/day, so we do not quote a result for one 1000 mg capsule.
- No substitute: we did not open a source comparing black seed with a diet or with obesity treatment from a doctor.
- Details: the dose is in black seed oil capsules: dose and timing, and safety in black seed side effects: who should avoid it.

Who should ask a doctor first?
- Anyone with obesity or excess weight together with diabetes, high blood pressure or high fats: diagnosis and the plan stay with the doctor, and black seed is not a treatment.
- People on diabetes or blood pressure medicines: sugar and pressure may fall further, so keep monitoring.
- People on blood thinners such as warfarin: a lab study predicted an interaction above 1 g of oil a day.
- People with kidney or liver disease: rare cases were reported after black seed oil.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children, before any surgery, and anyone allergic to black seed or gelatin.

FAQ
Does black seed help you slim?
The 2018 review (11 studies) found a fall in weight of 2.11 kg and the 2026 review (31 trials) found 1.59 kg, a modest average fall and not a slimming plan.
Does it reduce belly circumference?
The 2018 review found a 3.52 cm fall in waist circumference, while the 2026 review found no effect on it, so the result is not confirmed.
How much do I take to slim?
The abstracts do not set a dose for slimming; trials in the 2025 review ranged from 200 to 4,600 mg a day for 1 to 48 weeks.
Does it replace a diet?
No; the authors called the improvement modest, and we did not open a source comparing it with a diet, so slimming needs lifestyle and a doctor’s follow-up.
Is it safe?
No serious side effects were reported in the 2018 review, but rare cases of kidney and liver injury were reported after black seed oil, so ask a doctor first.
Is there a hadith with a specific number of seeds?
An Islamweb fatwa says no hadith sets the amount or method, and that its use is referred to experienced doctors.

The bottom line
Two reviews found black seed lowered weight by 1.6 to 2.1 kg on average, but the waist is not confirmed and quality varies, so it is a small add-on, not a slimming plan. For obesity the diagnosis and plan stay with your doctor, and if you take diabetes or blood pressure medicines ask before you start.
