The 30-second answer

Per the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), a child aged 8 to 11 washes hair once or twice a week, dry curly hair every 7 to 10 days, shampoo goes on the scalp rather than the lengths, and dry or curly hair needs conditioner. For frequent washing the cheapest is Superkids at EGP 120, for babies Dermactive Baby at EGP 179, and for curly hair Penduline with argan at EGP 198.

How often should you wash your child’s hair?

The AAD chart covers ages 8 to 12; there is no chart for younger children in that source, so ask your paediatrician.

  • Oily straight hair, or an active or swimming child: every other day or daily at age 12 or at puberty.
  • Ages 8 to 11: once or twice a week.
  • Dry curly hair, braids or weaves: every 7 to 10 days.
  • After heavy sweating or swimming: rinse and condition, and wash pool chemicals out after swimming.
  • Adjust by observation: if the scalp is oily add a wash a week, and if hair is dull, dry or shedding remove one. If the scalp still looks too oily or dry, see a dermatologist.

The bath routine step by step

  • Shampoo: wet hair with warm water, put a quarter-size drop in the child’s palm and massage it into the scalp, because washing the scalp matters, not the full length. Rinse until suds-free.
  • Conditioner: for children with dry or curly hair, after a good rinse.
  • Combing: comb damp hair gently with a wide-tooth comb (more often than a brush), and do not yank through knots.
  • Drying: cover hair with a towel, because rubbing it dry can break hair.
  • Styles: loose braids and ponytails with covered bands, styles without heat or chemicals, and lower heat if used.

See a paediatrician or dermatologist if

  • Your child’s scalp stays very oily or very dry despite following the chart (AAD advice).
  • The child is a young baby and you want to pick a shampoo: ask a paediatrician, because product pages do not state a starting age in months.
  • Redness, itching or flaking appears after a new product: stop it and ask.
  • Hair loss or patches without a clear reason.

FAQ

How often should I wash my child’s hair?

Per the AAD for ages 8 to 12: oily hair or an active child every other day or daily, ages 8 to 11 once or twice a week, and dry curly hair every 7 to 10 days.

Do I put shampoo on all of the hair?

The AAD recommends washing the scalp rather than the full length; use a quarter-size drop, massage it into the scalp and rinse well.

Does my child need conditioner?

The AAD says children with dry or curly hair should use a conditioner.

How do I detangle my child’s hair?

The AAD recommends combing damp hair gently with a wide-tooth comb without yanking through knots, and using a comb more often than a brush.

How should I dry my child’s hair?

Cover it with a towel, since rubbing can break hair per the AAD, and prefer styles without heat.

What should I do after swimming?

The AAD says to wash pool chemicals out, because they can damage hair if left.

The bottom line

Wash the scalp rather than the lengths, set how often by your child’s hair type, and use conditioner for dry or curly hair and a wide-tooth comb on damp hair. Choose by hair type and price per ml; there is no study-proven difference between the products here, so choose by what suits your child.
