Guides to help you choose
All guides →How to Choose a Retinol Product
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative, usually sought by people concerned about the look of fine lines, pores and uneven tone. Most of the shelf is serums and ampoules with stated strengths, such as SKIN1004's 0.2% and BIONNEX's 1%, some paired with niacinamide or hyaluronic acid. You'll also find eye creams and eye serums, Daky's 0.5% night cream, a body lightening gel and full routine bundles. Prices run from about 130 EGP to 2,095 EGP for bundles.
How to choose
- New to retinol? Start low, like 0.2%, twice weekly, then increase slowly as skin adjusts.
- For sensitive skin, look for formulas with soothing partners like centella, hyaluronic acid or vitamin E.
- For under-eyes, choose a dedicated eye cream rather than a face serum; that skin is thinner.
- Apply at night and wear sunscreen every morning, since skin may become more sun-sensitive.
- Pregnant, breastfeeding or using prescribed skin treatments? Ask a pharmacist or doctor first.
Frequently asked questions
Which strength should I start with?
Beginners usually do well with a low strength such as SKIN1004's 0.2% ampoule, moving to around 1% later if skin tolerates it. Higher isn't automatically better and may cause more dryness and peeling. If you're unsure about your skin type, ask the pharmacist.
How and how often do I use it?
Apply a small amount at night on clean, dry skin, two or three times a week at first, then build up as tolerated. Follow with moisturizer and use sunscreen every morning. Mild redness or flaking in the first weeks is common; if it worsens, use it less often.
Who should avoid retinol or check first?
It's generally advised to avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor approves. Also check first if you use prescribed skin treatments or have eczema, irritated or broken skin. Don't layer it with another retinoid product. Ask the pharmacist about any skin condition before ordering.
Can I combine it with vitamin C, acids or niacinamide?
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) usually pairs well, which is why products like La Roche-Posay and Glami Lab combine them. Exfoliating acids and strong vitamin C are better separated: use them in the morning or on alternate nights, and retinol at night, to reduce irritation.
Eye cream or face serum?
If you're targeting under-eyes, pick an eye-specific product such as the La Roche-Posay, Some By Mi or Infinity eye creams, or Derma Ten's caffeine eye serum. Face serums cover larger areas; keep them away from the eye rim. Orders are cash on delivery and arrive within 12–72 hours.
