How to pick and protect your color

People who dye at home, cover greys or want to keep a fresh shade usually land here. The shelf has two kinds of products: L'Oréal Paris Prodigy permanent hair colors (360–390 EGP), from deep black 01 and natural brown 4.0 to ruby red 6.60 and platinum ash blonde 10.1, several labelled ammonia-free or oil-based; and one care product, CIRA Pharma's Hepta Panthenol hair mask (264 EGP), for conditioning dyed lengths between colorings.

How to choose

  • Choose a shade close to your natural color, or one to two levels darker, for more predictable results.
  • The number before the dot is depth (1 black, 10 lightest blonde); after it is the tone.
  • Do the allergy test exactly as the box instructs before every coloring, even with a familiar product.
  • For lots of grey, natural shades (.0) like 4.0 or 8.0 usually give more even coverage.
  • Sensitive scalp, wounds or eczema? Ask a pharmacist or doctor before dyeing.

Frequently asked questions

What do numbers like 6.32 or 8.1 mean?

The first number is depth, from 1 (black) to 10 (very light blonde). The digits after the dot describe tone: .0 natural, .1 ash (cool), .3 golden, .6 red. So 6.32 is a dark blonde with golden reflect, and 8.1 is a light ash blonde.

Will 10.1 platinum blonde lighten my black hair?

Usually not to the shade shown on the box. Home permanent dyes lift only a limited number of levels, so very dark hair may turn coppery or darker than expected. Check the color chart on the pack; for a big change, a professional colorist is the safer route.

What does ammonia-free mean, and are all these dyes ammonia-free?

It means the dye uses a different alkaline agent instead of ammonia, so the smell is often milder. Not every product here is labelled that way, so check the name and box. Ammonia-free dyes are still permanent dyes and can still cause allergy, so the patch test matters.

When should I use the Hepta Panthenol mask?

Panthenol is provitamin B5, used in hair products as a moisturizing and softening ingredient. The mask may support softness and reduce the dry feel of colored hair. Apply after shampoo to the lengths as directed on the pack; many people wait a few days after coloring before starting.

Who should avoid hair dye or take extra care?

Anyone who has reacted to hair dye before, or has an irritated, broken or inflamed scalp, should avoid it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and teenagers should check with a doctor first. If itching, redness or swelling appears during the test or application, rinse immediately and ask the pharmacist or a doctor.
