If you sweat a lot in Egypt’s summer, choose an antiperspirant, because its aluminium reduces sweat itself: for example Kolagra Super Dry Men (EGP 115) or Secret Shower Fresh (EGP 280). If odour is your only problem or your skin is sensitive, a deodorant without an antiperspirant active is enough, such as Dermaelle (EGP 195). Research so far does not link aluminium to breast cancer, but people with kidney disease should ask a doctor first.
Deodorant or antiperspirant: what is the difference?
According to Cleveland Clinic, the two work differently: an antiperspirant reduces sweat, while a deodorant masks or neutralises odour without stopping sweat. Both help with odour.
| Antiperspirant | Deodorant | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Reduces underarm sweat | Masks or neutralises odour |
| Main ingredient | Aluminium salts that temporarily plug sweat ducts | Fragrances and odour-neutralising agents (such as zinc in Nuvera and Blankie) |
| Status in the US | A drug regulated by the FDA | A cosmetic |
| Suits | Heavy sweating, heat and crowds | Odour only, or sensitive skin |
| Best time | At night on dry skin | Morning, or whenever needed |
The aluminium-salt mechanism is from the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Cleveland Clinic; the regulatory status is from Cleveland Clinic.

How to use an antiperspirant properly in the heat
- Night, not morning: Cleveland Clinic says night is best, when sweating is at its lowest. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises applying it to dry skin before bed and letting it dry fully.
- Clean, dry skin: sweat or water reduces how well it works.
- Deodorant in the morning: for scent, add a deodorant in the morning over the antiperspirant you applied at night.
- After shaving: wait until the skin settles, because FDA labelling says not to use it on broken skin.
- If it irritates: AAD suggests applying it less often, switching to a gel, or making sure the skin is completely dry.
Common mistakes
- A deodorant for heavy sweat: it will not stop sweat; you need an antiperspirant.
- Applying it on wet skin straight after a shower: dry well first.
- Carrying on despite itching or a rash: stop right away, per FDA labelling.
- Assuming “whitening” means antiperspirant: brightening is a cosmetic claim; check what it says about sweat itself.
Is the aluminium in antiperspirants safe?
The US National Cancer Institute says no scientific evidence links antiperspirants or deodorants to breast cancer, and a 2014 review found no clear evidence that their aluminium raises the risk. Cleveland Clinic says the same. Even so, FDA antiperspirant labelling says: “Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease.”
Important safety notes
- Do not use an antiperspirant on broken skin, and stop if a rash or irritation appears (FDA labelling).
- If you have kidney disease, ask a doctor before using an antiperspirant (FDA labelling).
- Very heavy sweating that affects your day may be hyperhidrosis; AAD says over-the-counter products only help mild cases, so see a dermatologist.
- If your body odour changes suddenly or you sweat at night for no reason, see a doctor.

FAQ
What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?
An antiperspirant reduces sweat itself because it contains aluminium salts that temporarily plug sweat ducts. A deodorant masks or neutralises odour without stopping sweat.
What is the best deodorant for summer in Egypt?
If you sweat a lot, an aluminium antiperspirant such as Kolagra Super Dry or Secret. If odour is the only issue or your skin is sensitive, a deodorant such as Dermaelle or Nuvera is enough. Current prices are on each product page.
Does aluminium deodorant cause breast cancer?
There is no scientific evidence for that so far. The US National Cancer Institute says no evidence links antiperspirants or deodorants to breast cancer.
When should I apply antiperspirant?
Ideally at night before bed, on clean and completely dry skin, when sweating is at its lowest. You can add a deodorant in the morning.
Does an aluminium-free deodorant stop sweating?
No. A deodorant without an antiperspirant active reduces odour only, not the amount of sweat.
Who should not use antiperspirant?
People with kidney disease should ask a doctor first; it should not go on broken skin, and you should stop if a rash or irritation appears, per US FDA labelling.
Can I apply deodorant right after shaving?
It is better to wait until the skin settles, because antiperspirant should not go on broken skin. A gentle deodorant suits sensitive skin after shaving.
Is there a safe deodorant for kids?
There are gentle deodorants made for children, such as Blankie, labelled for ages 6 and up. If a child sweats heavily or their body odour changes suddenly, ask a paediatrician.
The bottom line
Heavy sweat: an aluminium antiperspirant (Kolagra Super Dry or Secret), applied at night on dry skin. Odour only or sensitive skin: a deodorant (Dermaelle or Nuvera). For kids: Blankie. If you have kidney disease, ask a doctor before using an antiperspirant.
