Oil improves how hair feels and looks, but no oil is proven to make hair grow longer. Coconut oil has the strongest evidence, for brittle hair, according to a 2022 systematic review. For dry or curly hair, try coconut oil at EGP 190; for fine hair or an oily scalp, jojoba oil at EGP 125 on the ends only; and for a ready-made blend, Hepta Panthenol at EGP 156. If your hair is falling out, see a dermatologist.
What does oil really do for hair?
- Coconut: a 2022 systematic review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology covered 22 studies and found coconut oil has been shown clinically to help brittle hair, with limited evidence for hair growth.
- Castor: the same review found weaker evidence that it adds shine, and no strong evidence that it grows hair.
- Argan: it found no significant evidence that argan oil improves hair growth or quality.
- What it means: choose an oil for feel, shine and less breakage, not to make hair grow longer.
- Hair loss: the American Academy of Dermatology says to see a dermatologist if you are worried about thinning hair or hair loss, and that earlier treatment gives better results.

The same idea as conditioner: the American Academy of Dermatology says fine or straight hair should get conditioner on the ends only, and dry or curly hair along the full length. That is the rule we use for oil too.

How to use hair oil

- Oil bath: follow the time on the pack, then wash.
- Shampoo: the American Academy of Dermatology says massage it into the scalp only and let the suds run through the lengths without scrubbing.
- Conditioner: after every shampoo.
- Drying: wrap your hair in a towel to absorb the water instead of rubbing, then let it air dry.
- Combing: straight hair should dry a little first and be combed gently with a wide-tooth comb; curly hair is combed while damp.
- Heat: lowest setting on dryers and irons, about once a week or less.
Common mistakes
- Expecting oil to grow hair: evidence for growth is limited even for coconut oil, and argan has no strong evidence.
- Heavy oil on an oily scalp: keep it on the ends, or choose a light oil.
- Oil for dandruff: dandruff needs a shampoo with an active ingredient; see the best dandruff shampoo and lotion in Egypt.
- Pulling hair tight: the American Academy of Dermatology advises wearing hair loosely pulled back, with coated bands made for hair.
- Colouring and straightening back to back: the same source advises one chemical service at a time, with a perm or relaxer 2 weeks before colouring.
Important notes
- Patch test any new oil on a small area first, especially blends with essential oils.
- Keep oil away from the eyes and out of children’s reach.
- If you have a nut allergy, avoid almond and argan oils and blends that contain them.
